If Superman does it.....

Superman telling US president he does not want to be US citizen anymore....
Would political bloggers be best served by forfeiting their citizenship?  I do not know whether the answer is to become a citizen of the world, but I can tell you that sometimes my eyes look like those of Superman during a Chavez cadena....
(hat tip FW who also dryly comments that Superman was an illegal alien to begin with, when the Kents found him).

  1. Actually, it is Clark Kent, who is, or is not, a U.S. Citizen. "Superman" is an alias, and could not be citizen.

And, getting past that, what country would he become citizen of? If none, he would be a Stateless Person, without a passport, unable to legally enter any country. Not that anyone could stop him, of course...

I hope Superman realizes that he is still on the hook to the IRS for 10 years after he renounces citizenship.

I wonder, who does his taxes?

  3. There is no such thing as world citizenship, thank God. As far as I am concerned they should just kill him off again.

When comic books try to get political they should understand that about half their audience might just vanish.

  4. Some years ago I tried. Very frustrated at the consulate while trying to get my passport renovated, I told them I didn't want to be venezuelan anymore. Their response: "you are not allowed to do that..."
    We are stuck.

Superman saw Obama´s birth certificate back in Krypton, and decided that Earth wasn´t big enough for the two of them. One had to go. Since Obama has no intention of going anywhere, then...

  8. Carolina,

That is not right. Please check out article 36 of the Bolivarian constitution. You should force that employee to give you an answer by sending him a registered letter.

    Roy,
In Venezuela Superman can have a nationality.

  10. It's actually bizarre to think that a world citizen could proceed to take justice into his own hands:) more easily than when being a citizen of a particular country.World citizenship should then be equated with individual power.Sounds like a comic book. Then again in comic books illegal aliens present no problems in terms of justice:)

  11. Superman may not owe taxes, but Clark Kent certainly does, federal, state and city taxes.

  12. Superman was not only an illegal alien. He also was a felon, since it is a felony to enter the United States at any point which is not a designated port of entry.

If only we could get someone strong enough to effect an arrest, he will do jail time.

  15. I agree with everyone confused over how Superman could renounce citizenship. Perhaps he got an honorary citizenship from the President at some point? Don't know if the POTUS has that authority. At any rate, I have to wonder where such a decision by Superman would leave poor Clark. I think it's safe to say it's just a symbolic announcement.

jsb, Clark Kent certainly has to PAY those taxes, but knowing Clark Kent (mild-mannered, and trying to stay under the radar), he doesn't actually owe any.

Jeffry, that may be a felony NOW, but I don't think it was a felony when he arrived.

And remember, all, as Phil Collins says, "It's no fun, being an illegal alien." :)
