I left Cuba many years ago, and I could never get the strength to go back and see the destruction. Why stay and watch everything disappear? Or leave and return to see the ruins? If any of you are interested in what it´s like, look up "The Art of Making Ruins", a video made by a German in Cuba. That´s Venezuela´s future. La Puerta and Merida, with hikes in the mountains around La Puerta. Some years later, I was hitching in TX and got picked up by a UT law student who was the product of a US-Venezuelan marriage, courtesy of the oil field. We got to talking. He said he had an uncle from Italy who owned a hotel in La Puerta. "Is he tall and blond/catire?" I asked. Yes, came the reply. I had stayed at his uncle's hotel. Small world, and not the first time I had met someone with whom we had a mutual acquaintance in Venezuela.Boludo Tejanonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4080946.post-8063950283214089532014-07-05T22:57:18.663+02:002014-07-05T22:57:18.663+02:00I remember during the early years of chavismo, a l...I remember during the early years of chavismo, a lot of people thought Margarita would be spared from the madness of the "revolution" because of international tourism, the duty free status, etc. Fast forward to today, and it's no safer or financially better off than anywhere else in Venezuela...Eddie Bnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4080946.post-36719455465724812772014-07-05T20:11:37.269+02:002014-07-05T20:11:37.269+02:00Hey Daniel,

Now we just don't, not to get killed for a pair of shoes..

I used to have a girlfriend there, so I started doing some small business with fishing supllies from Miami,, I knew local people with Ferreterias and other small business, of European descent or local, real Margaritenos..

It was a constant party, polarcitas, dominoes, barbecues de Toro, etc,, fishing, and late night bar/disco hoping, casinos.. I would also hang out on beach shorts, walking, tranquilooo.. all night, from " El Mosquito" to all those other places, back when they were full of turists, Canadians mainly, pretty blondes..

Nothing ever happened to me, coming back to modest hotels or anywhere late at night.. people knew me by then, even the few "malandros" around. We would go everywhere by moto or jeeps, or I would rent small beach cars con "mira luna", out to la Restinga, or real jungle places where the Margariteno campesinos, parents of my friends lived, humbly, but peacefully in nature.. Then the all-night partying would resume..

Breakfast was great at the local Panaderias, where I knew the girls serving, they would prepare my batidos de fruta natural sin azucar, sandwiches de jamon y queso tostadito y aplanaoo, as you only get there,, marroncito, etc.. perfect.. "anotamelo el la cuenta, amorcito"!! and I would pay them at the end of the week or whatever..

Saaaaadly, those days are gone..
Sledgehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10963609943524453700noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4080946.post-39371485733176108572014-07-04T20:10:22.897+02:002014-07-04T20:10:22.897+02:00Daniel, sorry I missed you when you were here.
As...Daniel, sorry I missed you when you were here.

As a person in tourism business I agree with everything you say.
Foreign tourism is virtually non existent these days - no flights & nervousness about the security.
In spite of this it's still a great location for independent travelers.
Great beaches, 95%+ sunny days & reasonable prices.

Hopefully the future will bring better news.Island Canucknoreply@blogger.com
