Dialogue-schmuckalogue

Today finally the first face off between the regime and the opposition under Vatican and Unasur guidance was held. Allow me to be deeply pessimistic about the prospects by just looking at the first picture.

What is wrong with that picture? Or if you prefer, what could possibly go wrong when the first scene of that movie is the one above?

Maduro IS PRESIDING!!!!!!!!! And far removed from anyone else!!!!!!

Symbols matter. Even more so when dialogue to avert civil wars are undertaken.

Here we have the guy who is the psychological focus of all that has been going wrong since Chavez died, and he is presiding? How could the opposition accept to sit down with Maduro? One thing is to try to dialogue with Maduro's people, another is to discuss under his direct oversight. At a moment when Maduro is cornered and totally done overseas, such a picture gives him a new legitimacy at home. The more so that only state TV is showing news on the scene, and manipulating the whole thing at will.

I am haggardly in shock. Well, until I found my way to this key board anyway.

  1. A HUGE mistake. Sometimes I think its too easy to criticize from afar but this is obviously unacceptable. Neither the Vatican or the MUD should have accepted that set-up. He seemed like a chaperone or a parent dropping off the kids to play. Side note: I think it is terrifying that the regime is basically threatening the country with a Syrian-like Civil War. They presumably have total control of the armed forces, security forces and paramilitary forces. A war could only be started by them.

    1. My guess is that Maduro donated handsomely tot he church in his visit and requested the meeting. No corporation on earth more easily bought then the catholic church.

    2. If Francis really wanted to help the people of Venezuela, he would have locked Maduro in the Vatican catacombs while he had the chance.

I heard the agre=ement was that Maduro would be allowed to speak for 10 minutes, shake hands, and then he had to leave for the rest of negotiations.

  6. So Maduro bribes the Vatican and the opposition eats up all the stalli g bullshit tactics. Like suddenly Maduro met with the pope and has changed and suddenly cares about the people of Venezuela and will negotiate a plan to help them. What a joke, likely these opposition members took a bribe to stall too.
