France. Language on signs is French and the protests are about the raising the retirement age.
ReplyDeleteImagine: They are whining about raising it to 62 from 60! In the U.S. it is 72. Or, have they raised it again? The French are really good about wanting to have their cake and eat it too.

Because the French government is always raining money and more money down upon on its constituents, the constituents are content enough to stay at home or converse in the local cafes- or at the local McDonalds. The perennially satisfied constituents of France see no need for a demonstration in France. All is fine. Taxes are low, benefits are increasing, and all government accounts have surpluses. So, this cannot be France. :)

John, stop the chauvinism. They don't have to be more thankful to you than you to them. You just need to read a history book different from what you got. French is not less normal than English. Don't be such a provincial creature.

Enjoy your time in France in spite of the whole inconveniences with their silly strike and the current terrible weather.
The strikers have very Chavista attitudes, they expect the state to give them everything. Although. unlike Venezuela, at least France actually has resources to spread around!

and economically it is the same.
France is in fact in a big mess and I think they are completely blind about that retirement age and other issues. But on that, they are inflicting it on themselves, so I would not call it so much spiritual bankruptcy. I would use that word more with the way their companies are operating in such countries as Congo (in similar ways as Belgium did before and is still doing with diamonds, China everywhere there, Russia as well).
Actually, when one starts to look at it, there is bankruptcy everywhere: from here to Iran, which is fueling the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq with its weapons and training for terrorists, to Israel, which is basically expanding settlements in invaded territories based on 2500+ year old stories, throwing out people whose ancestors for thousands of years were living there.
Venezuela is also spiritually bankrupt, although I have to own up our contribution to the world hasn't been that big, one way or the other.
Kepler, I agree, there is so much spiritual bankruptcy everywhere,including the USA.I am getting sick of people here seeing things first and foremost in terms of dollars and cents as well. But in my own personal estimation I perceive France a bit further down the road in these terms than most other countries, but on the other hand if they are lucky they will awaken sooner as well.I hope it is not too late.
