CHRISTMAS IN TIME OF “PARO”
Tuesday 24, December 2002
In regards to your words of support, either public or private, I am making this quick post to wish you all the best in these holidays, be it Kwanzaa to Hanukkah according to your way of life.
Also to reassure you that all is not lost, a quick update.
There seems to be a slight lull in politics. The government scored some points this weekend, albeit empty points. The opposition vigil was a huge success and compensated handily. So the table is set for some peace until Thursday, at least we hope so.
Tonight, just to be safe, my younger brother with wife and my 1-month-old niece will come to stay over for the night at my parents where I stay when I am in Caracas. In Venezuela we celebrate Christmas eve rather than Christmas where people go to church and perhaps visit some friends, but the big thing is tonight, late. Midnight in Christmas past was received with a HUGE display of fireworks and stuff. Perhaps this year it will be subdued and I cannot say that I will miss the noise. Thus people go to bed, overeaten, overdrunk, real late which explains why the 25 is rather low key.
We will have the French Christmas way, that is the regular Foie Gras, Turkey and Christmas Log cake and the variable side dishes. In Venezuela tradition we eat Hallacas (our version of Tamale but much better) Pernil (leg of Pork kind of Hawaiian style), Pan de Jamon (special bread stuff with ham, olives and other sundries) etc... We do love these items very much and eat them around Christmas but we keep our Christmas eve French, since this is our origin.
The difference will be that there will be no Christmas tree, just a subdued nativity scene and no presents, except from yours truly who as usual had many things bought by December first to avoid malls and crowds.... Oh well! At least they will be presents [the consign was not to shop for Christmas except for a simple toy for the younger ones who cannot understand what is going on, and deserve to keep some of their innocence].
So we will be OK tonight and I like that simplicity, back to the source type of thing.
Thank you again and we will meet again the 26 at the earliest, at least on the Venezuelan topic.
