Bolivia voted and Morales is far from a blank check

The first amazing thing is that the Bolivian CNE, also called CNE, is already publishing results. Voting ended up on time, even after 6 months of Morales rule... Yet, again, another example on how inefficient, lousy, incompetent and cheating the Venezuelan CNE is. But I digress.

Let's see what we can already make of it.

With a handful of votes counted, the “SI” wins the referendum. Morales wanted the “NO” to win. However he seems to get the absolute majority in the Constituent Assembly. But a bare one, not the 2/3 he needed to pass everything as he pleased.

Other press reports and exit polls seem to confirm this meager handful of votes.

Maybe Bolivia has a chance to escape Chavez curse still. It seems that Morales did not get the electoral payoff he hoped from the nationalization of gas and other eccentricities. The bad news is that Santa Cruz voted massively for the SI whereas the Altiplano voted massively for the NO. One step closer to break up….

Later

According to a newspaper from Santa Cruz, El Nuevo Dia, the NO won but barely. However it confirms the new geological divide in Bolivia where the East and South want more autonomy while the Altiplano voted NO to suck the excess revenue from Santa Cruz and Tarija.

El Deber of Santa Cruz already gives graphic details, showing almost frightfully the Bolivian divide where only the province of Chuquisaca offers a moderate result: 43% SI, 57% NO.

No La Paz paper publishes updates. We will need to wait for tomorrow editions.
